Psychology Undergraduates Receive Diversity Scholarships


Michael Graham and Zack Robinson, undergraduate psychology majors, were each awarded $500 Undergraduate Diversity Research Grants by the VT Student Success Center. The students will use the awards to help fund independent research projects they are conducting along with their menotrs, Drs. Scarpa and Harrison, respectively.

Dr. Kelly Harrison Receives Teaching Award


Dr. Kelly Harrison was selected to be a recipient of a 2013-2014 College of Science Dr. Carroll B. Shannon Certificate of Teaching Excellence. Dr. Harrison is an instructor in the Department of Psychology who is known for excellence in teaching courses such as developmental psychology, physiological psychology, and senior seminars on the psychology of aging.

Amanda Watson Receives APA Dissertation Award


Amanda Watson, doctoral student in the Developmental Science concentration, is the recipient of a 2013 American Psychological Association Dissertation Award. She will receive $1,000 to help offset the costs of her dissertation research.

Kim Raymond Selected as Staff Employee of the Week


Budget Manager, Kim Raymond, has been selected as the Staff Employee of the Week by Human Resources. Kim is an invaluable member of the Department of Psychology who single handedly manages all of the financial affairs. Her dedication to the job is much appreciated by everyone.

Faculty Search for Senior-Level Neuroscientist


The Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech is seeking applicants for a senior-level faculty position in Neuroscience at our Blacksburg campus. Exceptional candidates with an emphasis in cognitive, affective, social, or developmental neuroscience; biological psychology; or computational neuroscience, all with a focus on human systems, are encouraged to apply. Appointment will be made at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank.  Preference will be given to senior neuroscientists who complement and expand our existing research efforts.

Susan White Appointed Book Series Editor


Dr. Susan White will be the inaugural editor of a new book series on clinical science and evidence-based practice. The series will be published by Oxford University Press in collaboration with the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT).

 

Martha Ann Bell Appointed to Advisory Committee for Autism Speaks


Dr. Martha Ann Bell has accepted an invitation to become a member of the External Advisory Committee for the “High Risk Baby Siblings Research Consortium” at Autism Speaks.  She will help monitor and advise the principal investigators whose research with baby sibs is funded by Autism Speaks.  Responsibilities include attending the annual meeting of the research consortium in Washington DC in October.

Dr. Martha Ann Bell and Dr. Kirby Deater-Deckard, professors of psychology, are the inaugural head editors for a new book series in Developmental Science published by Psychology Press/Taylor & Frances. They will be publishing 2-3 edited volumes per year.

Warren Bickel to Co-Chair NIH Science of Behavior Change Common Fund


Dr. Warren Bickel, Professor of Psychology and Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute has been selected to Co-Chair along with Minda Lynch, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) Common Fund<http://commonfund.nih.gov/behaviorchange/index.aspx> program meeting titled Harnessing Neuroplasticity for Behavior Change on September 23-24, 2013 on the NIH main campus in Bethesda, MD. Dr.
