Susan White Gets New Grant to Develop Emotion Training Software

Dr. Susan White and her colleague Dr. Lynn Abbott, of Electrical and Computer Engineering, are co-PIs on a new NIH-funded R03 titled Developing an Automated Emotion Training System . The long-term goal of this project is to develop an interactive, computer-assisted system that will help children who struggle with recognition and expression of nonverbal emotion. In pilot research, this research team created a publicly available facial expression dataset using the Kinect 1.0 sensor (Aly, Trubanova, Abbott, White, & Youssef, 2015) and has shown that the system can indeed accurately detect and classify human emotion. They are now adapting the system to work in real-time to provide directive user feedback and piloting the system in children with and without autism spectrum disorder.
